How staff benefits costs build up

A salary package can include much more than wages alone. Pension, healthcare, training, equipment and bonuses all add to the real annual employer cost.

In short

If you only budget for salary, you can understate the real cost of keeping a person in role for the year. Benefits often matter as much as the base pay.

Typical benefit lines

Common items include employer pension contributions, private healthcare, training, equipment, software, home-working support, travel support and annual bonus or incentive costs.

Why employers track them separately

Once benefits are visible, it is easier to compare one offer with another and understand which roles are expensive because of pay and which are expensive because of extras.

What is not included

The calculator does not model tax treatment of benefits in kind, holiday accrual, the apprenticeship levy or wider office overheads. It is a planning tool rather than payroll advice.

Use the staff benefits cost calculator to estimate the annual package cost. You can also compare the wider hiring budget with the cost of hiring calculator.
